The Four Seasons
David Dawson, acclaimed for his innovative choreographic style, brings “The Four Seasons” to North American audiences for the first time. Set to Max Richter’s reimagined composition of Antonio Vivaldi’s iconic score, this contemporary ballet explores life’s cyclical nature and time’s passage. Dawson’s dynamic choreography, known for its expansive movements and emotional depth, promises to offer a fresh and compelling interpretation of a classic theme.
Morpheus’ Dream
The programme continues with the world premiere of “Morpheus’ Dream” by German choreographer Marco Goecke. This marks Goecke’s first commission for The National Ballet of Canada, following the company’s acquisition of his “Spectre de la Rose” in 2014. “Morpheus’ Dream” delves into the enigmatic realm of dreams, presenting a fraught relationship within an uncertain dreamscape. The ballet is characterized by Goecke’s signature movement style, oscillating between serenity and fitful energy, creating a unique and introspective experience for the audience.
The Leaves Are Fading
Concluding the programme is Antony Tudor’s “The Leaves Are Fading,” a poignant work reflecting on the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of life. Set to lyrical chamber music for strings by Antonín Dvořák, this ballet has a quiet poetry that resonates deeply with audiences. Not performed by The National Ballet of Canada since 1995, its revival commemorates the 50th anniversary of its creation, offering both longtime ballet enthusiasts and new audiences an opportunity to experience Tudor’s timeless choreography.
Artistic Director Hope Muir has curated this programme to highlight themes of reflection and change, showcasing a blend of contemporary innovation and classical elegance. The combination of premieres and a historic revival underscores the company’s commitment to presenting diverse and thought-provoking works that captivate and inspire.
Tickets for this limited engagement are available through The National Ballet of Canada’s official website. Attendees are encouraged to secure their seats early, as this compelling triple bill is anticipated to attract significant interest from both ballet aficionados and newcomers alike.
