Pumpkin Parades have become a cherished post-Halloween tradition in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), celebrated annually on November 1st. These events offer communities a fun, eco-friendly way to say goodbye to their jack-o-lanterns. Residents bring their pumpkins to local parks, displayed in glowing rows for a final night of Halloween-themed fun. After the event, the city collects the pumpkins for composting, promoting sustainability while giving families a delightful evening stroll among hundreds of creatively carved pumpkins.
The tradition started in Sorauren Park in 2004 and has since spread to numerous neighbourhoods across Toronto and the GTA, including Trinity Bellwoods Park, Withrow Park, and East Lynn Park. Each year, communities showcase an impressive array of artistic jack-o-lanterns, ranging from simple designs to intricate works of art. This gathering fosters a sense of community and brings neighbours together, offering a safe, family-friendly event to extend the Halloween celebrations by one more day.
Many parks host these pumpkin parades starting around dusk, creating an enchanting atmosphere as the carved pumpkins are illuminated. The city actively supports these parades by providing compost bins for easy disposal, ensuring that the event is entertaining and environmentally responsible.
