February Weekends at Scarborough Museum

On weekends in February, join Scarborough Museum in celebrating Black History Month with activities that explore what it means to create space for one’s community, weaving together stories, art, and shared experiences. Enjoy the museum’s story corner, featuring books for all ages that celebrate Black-lived experiences and stories. Fires will be lit in the Cornell House and McCowan Log House kitchens, with warm drinks being served in the Cornell Kitchen.

Family Day Weekend Storytelling with Kesha Christie
Montgomery’s Inn, 4709 Dundas St W

Montgomery’s Inn’s Family Day weekend Storytelling programming will feature 3 days of storytelling from Kesha Christie and Nadia Hohn, presenting Anansi storytelling and African and Caribbean folktales: stories about family, community, and traditions. Hands-on craft activities and a free book to take home for kids!

* From February 15th to 17th the museum will open at 10 am to access our Reading Nook, and there will be family-friendly crafts starting at 11 am until the museum closes at 4 pm.

Family Day Weekend at Gibson House Museum
Gibson House Museum, North of Park Home Avenue / Gibson Park

Family-friendly hands-on activities in the modern gallery space. Try one of our table looms. Take home a mini cardboard loom. Learn a new game, or play an old favorite in the restored dining room. Tour the historic house and learn more about family life in the 1850’s. Visit the photo exhibit in celebration of Black History Month, and black citizens of North York and Toronto.

Throughout the Family Day Weekend, visitors of all ages can tour the first floor of the historic house, enriched with special content celebrating figures within Black Toronto and the Canadian diaspora. Visitors are encouraged to reflect on their own identities and the identities of those around them by crafting a zine. Zines are self-made and self-published works of art that represent an alternate, more accessible way of disseminating stories, connecting with others, and promoting artists. Families (in every sense of the word) are invited to explore, learn, and get creative together!

Celebrate Black History Month at Todmorden Mills in the Don Valley
Todmorden Mills Heritage Site, 67 Pottery Rd.

Connect with Toronto’s local Black History and learn about the lives and legacies of Lucie and Thornton Blackburn, William Peyton Hubbard and Mary Ann Shadd Cary. Enjoy light refreshments and craft keychains, inspired by the Blackburns’ taxi cab business. Create cards highlighting William Peyton Hubbard’s accomplishments, and try your hand at cut-out poetry, using the words from Mary Ann Shadd Cary’s newspaper, the Provincial Freeman.

Join in on enhanced tours (11:30, 1:00 and 2:45) of the historic houses, highlighting local Black history, and visit the Black History Month display case in the Papermill Gallery. Drop-in craft activities and light refreshments are located in the Brewery building.

Family Day Fun at Fort York
Fort York National Historic Site, 100 Garrison Rd.

Take part in the historic baking and cooking in the original 1826 Mess Kitchen. Try your skills in our drop-in schoolroom activities, discovering the importance of school and education in the early 1800s. Witness the sights and sounds of a musket demonstration and music workshops. Or join a tour and learn about the fascinating history of Fort York and the role of Black Canadians in the War of 1812!

Unleash your inner poet at Colborne Lodge this Family Day! Drop in for an inspirational house tour and then craft your responses and feelings into poetry about the colonial history of the museum. Staff will guide you through a poetry creation journey to unlock your hidden talents. Beginner to bard – all levels of wordsmiths are welcome.
