Cirque du Soleil and The Shoebox Project for Women join forces with a special performance of Alegría in Toronto

September 19, 2019 – SOLD OUT
Under the Big Top, Ontario Place

Cirque du Soleil joins forces with The Shoebox Project for Women for the Toronto Media Premiere of Alegría, its most iconic production. On September 19th, the two organizations will team-up for a spectacular night of entertainment under the Big Top with the aim of raising both awareness and funds for women impacted by homelessness in the Toronto area.

Founded by sisters-in-law Jessica, Caroline, Vanessa and Katy Mulroney in 2011, The Shoebox Project for Women collects and distributes gift-filled Shoeboxes to women impacted by homelessness in communities across Canada and the US. Each thoughtfully created and decorated Shoebox is filled with items valued at $50, as well as a message of encouragement and support, which can enhance self-confidence and reduce feelings of isolation. In 2018, The Shoebox Project delivered approximately 46,500 Shoeboxes to 570 local shelters and community agencies serving women across North America.

Sharing similar values as The Shoebox Project for Women, Cirque du Soleil uses art to positively impact communities and intervene in the lives of marginalized youth. In Toronto, and in every city visited by its Big Top productions, Cirque du Soleil partners with local organizations to build a brighter future and inspire the world to shine. The September 19th Media Premiere of Alegría will be dedicated to the Shoebox Project for Women and its cause, with VIP guests, media and celebrities invited to either bring a filled and decorated Shoebox to the event or make a financial donation.

About The Shoebox Project for Women

For women who have been displaced from their homes or estranged from their families, special occasions can be particularly challenging. Often, women report feeling disconnected from society, invisible and alone. A Shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued and respected member of her community. For those giving gifts, The Shoebox Project is a tangible and creative opportunity to give back directly to someone in their very own community. It’s a small, simple gesture of kindness that has an immediate, positive impact on the woman who receives it. Since its inception, The Shoebox Project has distributed approximately 180,000 Shoeboxes, valued at 9 million dollars, and has about 80 volunteer-run Local Chapters in operation across North America.
