“Around-the-World” Fiddle Jam!!
The WORLD FIDDLE DAY TORONTO 2017 promises to be another spectacular event taking place on Saturday, May 20that the prestigious Aga Khan Museum. There will be 100 fiddlers playing a multitude of tunes from all over the world, accompanied by a stellar back-up band consisting of world percussion, clarinet, and keys, all celebrating world music. Special guest artists are Pascal Gemme/Yann Falquet (Quebec fiddle/guitar), Kousha Nakhaei (Persian fiddle), Amely Zhou (erhu), Anne Lindsay (jazz, original music), and DnA (Diana and Andrew Dawydchak – Ontario Fiddle/stepdance) who’ll lead the morning workshops, then perform at an evening concert in the acoustically superb Aga Khan Auditorium. Toronto’s 5th annual World Fiddle Day is gearing up for its largest gathering of bowed string instruments to date, with its usual focus of celebrating Canadian and Global traditions. The mission is to provide opportunities for string players of all backgrounds to come together, learn from some of the best and create magnificent music.
Each year there are special guest artists featured in workshop and concert, and the pièce de resistance led by fiddle fave Anne Lederman, the “Around-the-World Jam.” This is a must-experience-to-be-believed kind of happening, where tunes from Canadian folk traditions take their place alongside great music from around the globe.

w/ House Band: Emilyn Stam (5-string violin), David Woodhead (fretless electric bass), Naghmeh Farahmand (percussion), Martin Van de Ven (clarinet), Tom Leighton (keyboards, accordion), and led by Anne Lederman (2016 recipient of the Estelle Klein Award for contributions to Folk Music). This signature event is for all players of bowed strings – a unique, inspiring, listening and participatory experience for all. Community Workshops are held on a regular basis at Long & McQuade Clinic space, 935 Bloor St. West, from February to May, to prepare for the jam. They are open to all by donation – see www.worldfiddledaytoronto.ca for dates and repertoire). World Fiddle Day Toronto also does Outreach Programs for Youth – ESA, Mjncc Suzuki, Rosedale Heights, Sistema Toronto, RCM Suzuki and Mariposa in the Schools, have all been part of the programs in the past. Anne Lindsay (jazz, original music)
Anne Lindsay has established herself as one of the most engaging and versatile instrumentalists in Canada, adapting her unique violin/fiddle style to the eclectic sounds and musical languages of this country’s rich cultural texture. She is an exuberant fireplug of a session-player-to-the-stars (Led Zeppelin, The Chieftains, Blue Rodeo, James Taylor, Roger Daltry), whose skills have graced many a stage around the world. Anne has played on hundreds of recordings and is a featured performer with the Jim Cuddy Band, The Skydiggers and John McDermott. DnA – Diana and Andrew Dawydchak (Ontario Fiddle/step-dance)
These Toronto-based multi-talented instrumentalists have left crowds in awe in the wake of their performances. Sharing the same DnA as brother and sister, Diana and Andrew Dawydchak (David-chak) fill their live performances with exhilarating, high-energy original tunes, modern Celtic music with hints from Quebec, Cape Breton, the Ottawa Valley and more. The award winning brother and sister duo combine Celtic, French Canadian and Ottawa Valley fiddle and step dance into an electrifying performance! Amely Zhou (Chinese er hu)
Amely is a young erhu player from China who began her studies at the Shenzhen Arts School, moving to Canada in 2007. She joined the Toronto Chinese Orchestra, and is now assistant principal. In 2010, she co-founded the Chinese-Western fusion instrumental band, Spire, utilizing both Eastern and Western musical elements. In 2013, Amely won the York University Concerto Competition and performed as a soloist with the York University Symphony Orchestra. She also collaborates frequently with musicians/composers from different musical backgrounds. www.amelyzhou.com
Kousha Nakhaei (Persian fiddle)
Kousha Nakhaei is a violinist, kamancheh player, and music educator. He has studied classical music, improv, Celtic music and especially, Persian classical music on both kamancheh (Persian spiked fiddle) and violin, which he has been performing, and teaching for several years. He has performed with many artists including Yoyo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, Loreena McKennitt, Ostad Naser Masoudi, and Sepideh Raissadat. He is a founding member of Sarv Ensemble which has toured extensively across Canada. Kousha is also director of Sarv Music Academy. www.facebook.com/kousha.nakhaei
Pascal Gemme/Yann Falquet (Quebec fiddle/guitar)
Yann & Pascal started their musical journey 20 years ago, busking on the streets of Montréal. They have since played over a thousand shows in twenty countries with the Quebecois trio Genticorum, and they now return as a duo to present an intimate show based on the close musical bond forged by years of touring together. Yann and Pascal are both master entertainers, and this format provides plenty of space for their musical personalities to shine.
