A tale of love and struggle, with a special emphasis on the empowerment of women, Follow Your Heart is rooted in the rich traditions of Middle Eastern dance and culture. This multidisciplinary spectacle tells an inspiring and courageous story of a modern Middle Eastern woman, Almaza, in love with Jivan, a traditional Middle Eastern man, in modern-day Toronto. It is a journey of a woman who fights for love against all odds; a love story of taboo and tradition.
Keshishian notes, “My aim is to bring people and cultures together by focusing on our commonalities versus our differences. I am inspired by concepts of women’s empowerment, diversity, multiculturalism and breaking down barriers. I strive to bring a sense of peace and belonging through fusing cultures and dance forms. Follow Your Heart is a feast, not only for the eyes, but also the soul. Follow Your Heart is important at this time in light of current world events as it seeks to be a true representation of Middle Eastern people, not from a political or religious perspective, but from a cultural and social point of view. I am excited to bring audiences a transformative story that showcases the rich and colourful Middle Eastern traditions and culture. My work is influenced by the context of my upbringing: as a Christian raised in a Muslim country, I gained insight into these two different worlds. The aim is to bring the world together; to bring culture, peace and love together in a beautiful way. One heartbeat, One culture, One race.”
With a talented international cast, a dramatic love story, spectacular costumes, haunting music (both live and recorded), digital media and stunning dance – ranging from traditional belly dance to jazz to hip-hop and more – Follow Your Heart seamlessly combines Western contemporary dance forms and traditional Middle Eastern dance styles with theatre and live original music for a truly unique, cross-cultural event as it draws audiences into a world of beauty, mystery, and passion. A Middle Eastern story with a universal appeal, Follow Your Heartinspires and educates as it entertains.
Heading the 45-plus ensemble on stage are Toronto-based performers Teria Morada and Mohamad Haiek. A two-time Jr. Canadian Rhythmic Gymnastics Champion and multiple Latin Dance champion versed in a multiplicity of dance genres, Teria Morada portrays Almaza. Syrian-born Mohamad Haiek, who performed as a member of Enana Dance Theatre before moving to Canada in 2011, is Jivan.
