Harbourfront Centre
KUUMBA 365 at Harbourfront Centre celebrates the vibrant cultures of the African diaspora year-round, from February 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026. This extended series features an incredible lineup of arts, culture, music, dance, and discussions, creating a space to honour Black heritage and the ongoing impact of Black voices in Canada. Derived from the Swahili word “Kuumba,” meaning creativity, the series invites audiences of all backgrounds to explore, learn, and celebrate the depth and diversity of Black expression.
Throughout the year, KUUMBA 365 offers a variety of live performances, art exhibitions, film screenings, and workshops, showcasing both established and emerging Black artists. From dance troupes and jazz ensembles to spoken word and hip-hop showcases, the program spans multiple genres, reflecting the dynamic cultural contributions of the Black community. This series at Harbourfront Centre is known for bringing together artists from across Canada and beyond, fostering an inclusive, engaging environment where creativity thrives and stories are told authentically.
The second edition of KUUMBA 365 invites four artists to respond to The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery’s Fall 2024 Exhibitions. Choreographers Katlyn Addison, Lua Shayenne, Esie Mensah and Syreeta Hector choose one or more works to respond to through the Black cultural lens using dance as the artistic medium of choice. Their creative process is documented through diary entries and personal interviews, culminating in a live dance performance.
The program also includes insightful panel discussions and talks that address contemporary issues affecting Black communities, fostering dialogues on identity, social justice, and cultural heritage. These thought-provoking sessions provide a platform for Black leaders, activists, and scholars to share their perspectives and drive change. KUUMBA 365 is more than an art festival; it’s a cultural movement, one that underscores the importance of ongoing support, representation, and allyship within the arts.
KUUMBA 365 invites the community to come together in solidarity, reflection, and celebration throughout the year. Whether attending an exhibit or a dance workshop, visitors can immerse themselves in the richness of Black culture and witness the transformative power of the arts.
